Mary of Magdala
Matthew 27, 55-61.
And many women were there, watching from a distance,
the same women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him. Among
them were Mary of Magdala, Mary, the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother
of Zebedees sons.
When it was evening, there came a rich man of
Arimathea, called Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. This man
went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate thereupon ordered it to
be handed over. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud and put
it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a
large stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. Now Mary of Magdala
and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
Mark 15,40-41
There were some women watching from a distance.
Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary who was the mother of James the younger
and Joset, and Salome. These used to look after him and follow him when he was
in Galilee. And there were many other women there who had come up to Jerusalem
with them.
Mark 15,47
Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset were watching and took
note of where he was laid.
Mark 16,1-11
When the sabbath was over, Mary of Magdala, Mary, the
mother of James, and Salome, bought spices with which to go and anoint him. And
very early in the morning on the first day of the week they went to the tomb,
just as the sun was rising. They had been saying to one another, Who will
roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? But when they
looked they could see that the stone which was very big had
already been rolled back. On entering the tomb they saw a young man in a white
robe seated on the right-hand side, and they were struck with amazement. But he
said to them, There is no need for alarm. You are looking for Jesus of
Nazareth, who was crucified: he has risen, he is not here. See, here is the
place where they laid him. But you must go and tell his disciples and Peter,
He is going before you to Galilee; it is there you will see him, just as
he told you. And the women came out and ran away from the tomb because
they were frightened out of their wits; and they said nothing to a soul, for
they were afraid
.Having risen in the morning of the first day of the
week, he appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven
devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were
mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they
heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him.
Luke 8,2-4
Now after this he made his way through towns and
villages preaching, and proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom of God. With
him went the Twelve, as well as certain women who had been cured of evil
spirits and ailments: Mary surnamed the Magdalene, from whom seven demons had
gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herods steward Chuza, Susanna, and several
others who provided for them out of their own resources.
Luke 23,55-56; 24:1-11
Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with
Jesus were following behind. They took note of the tomb and of the position of
the body. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the
sabbath day they rested, as the Law required.
On the first day of the week, at the first sign of
dawn, they went to the tomb with spices they had prepared. They found that the
stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but on entering discovered that the
body of the Lord Jesus was not there. As they stood there not knowing what to
think, two men in brilliant clothes suddenly appeared at their side. Terrified,
the women lowered their eyes. But the two men said to them, Why look
among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here; he has risen. Remember
what he told you when he was still in Galilee: that the Son of Man had to be
handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, and rise again on
the third day. And they remembered his words.
When the women returned from the tomb they told all
this to the eleven and to all the others. The women were Mary of Magdala,
Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. The other women with them also told the
apostles, but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not
believe them.
John 19,25-27
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his
mothers sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his
mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,
Woman, this is your son. Then to the disciple he said, This
is your mother. And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in
his home.
John 20:1-18
It was very early on the first day of the week
and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb, weeping. Then, still
weeping, she stooped to look inside, and saw two angels in white sitting where
the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other at the feet. They said,
Woman, why are you weeping? They have taken my Lord
away, she replied and I dont know where they have put
him. As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there,
though she did not recognise him. Jesus said, Woman, why are you weeping?
Who are you looking for? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said,
`Sir, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go
and remove him. Jesus said, Mary!. She knew him then and said
to him in Hebrew, Rabbuni! which means- Master. Jesus said
to her, Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the
Father. But go and find the brothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my
Father and your Father, to my God and your God. So Mary of Magdala went
and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had said these
things to her.
Mary of Bethany
Luke 7, 38-42
In the course of their journey Jesus came to a village, and a woman
named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat
down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was
distracted by all the serving said: Lord, do you not care that my sister
is leaving me to do all the serving by myself? Please, tell her to help
me. But the Lord answered: Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about
so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has
chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.
John 12,1-8
Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus
was, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there; Martha
waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table. Mary brought in a pound of
very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping
them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment. (see
parallel texts, without mention of the name Mary in Matthew
26,6-13; Mark 14,3-9 and, probably, Luke 7, 36-50).
