Opinio communis Komano poyang'anira mbiri ya Mpingo tiona kuti chigwirizano cha maganizo a ma Bishopi chithanso kukhala ndi zolakwika.

Zaka 100 zapitazo ma bishopi ambiri amatsutsa maphunziro a Sayansi omwe amalongosola za mayambiriro a chilengedwe cha anthu. Nthawi imeneyo panali chikhupiriro chozama choti dziko linalenedwa m'masiku asanu ndi limodzi! Izi sizikutanthauza kuti ma Bishopi onse umagwirizana pa umphunzitsi umenewu.

  4. Mogwirizana ndi chikhulupiriro ndi malamulo.

  5. Kudzera mu chimphunzitso chomwe popanda kupeneka aganizira bwino kuti ndi 'chiphunzitso choonadi.'

A Mphunzitsi a Mpingo ali ndi udindo wofunika mu Tchalitchi. Titha kufananitsa ndi udindo wa mabungwe woyanira zakudya ndi umoyo wa anthu womwe ali ndi ntchito yowonetsetsa kuti anthu akahale ndi umoyo wa ngwiro ndi thanzi.

Choncho sisikutithandiza mu Mpingo wathu tikamaona kuti a Khristu akutaya ayamba kupeneka mu chikhulipirio chomwe amayika pa atsogoleri a Mpingo, izi zikuchiku chifukwa a Phunzitsi Mpingo anataya, ndipo adakatayiratayira kudalilika kwawo pa za uphunzitsi.

Not so, not so!

Jesus wanted to liberate women. Excluding women permanently from the priesthood would be totally uncharacteristic of him. In fact, he made women equal partners in the priesthood which he imparted through baptism. This disposes women to share in his full priestly ministry.

  Jesus chose 12 apostles to replace the 12 tribal ‘fathers’ of Israel. In the cultural context of his time, it was natural he chose men for this limited purpose.

Moreover, it is invalid to argue from something Jesus did not do [= not choosing a woman on one occasion], to his establishing a permanent norm for all time to come.

And, do not forget, women were present at the Last Supper when Jesus said: “Do this in commemoration of me!”

In such texts Paul sometimes ‘rationalised’, that is: he used popular arguments that do not contain doctrinal teaching.

  Christ’s ministerial priesthood derives from us becoming his priests through baptism.

Well, Paul taught the fundamental equality of men and women in Christ through baptism: Galatians 3,27-28.

It is true that some disciples of Paul forbade women to teach. But this was only to meet the specific needs of their community. The prohibition does not apply to the whole future Church as a permanent norm.

  No valid distinction can be made between two alleged categories among Paul’s co-workers: those in true ministries and those not. And Paul clearly counted women among his co-workers.

Throughout the centuries, the formulation of Christian doctrine has been influenced by the prevailing culture of the time. Culture shift has affected even core doctrines such as those regarding the Trinity, the Incarnation, etc. But the ‘doctrines on the margin’ have often been totally hijacked by dominant cultures.

    • social order — democracy was forbidden, kings were thought to rule ‘by divine right’, the class system was upheld in church, colonialism was endorsed by popes.
    • the created world — Galileo was condemned as a heretic (!) for believing the earth goes round the sun, astrology was honoured, the six-day creation taught as inspired teaching.
    • liturgy — Roman everyday dress became ‘sacred vestments’, bishops were treated as feudal lords, Latin was considered God’s own language.
    • sexuality — Gnostic fears led to a negative approach, Roman & German civil laws shaped church wedding rules.

Women were excluded from exercising priestly functions on cultural grounds.

Women were considered ‘beautiful creatures’, but totally inferior to men.

    • less intelligent
    • emotionally unstable
    • unreliable
    • not capable of exercising any real leadership

This inferiority was seen confirmed by the view that women were not complete human beings.

Since the function of the female ovum was unknown, procreation was ascribed to the male sperm which alone, it was thought, contains new life.

This was the reason why theologians like Thomas Aquinas ruled out ordaining women.

Women also suffered from a terrible ‘malady’, namely their monthly periods. This made them unsuitable for service at God’s holy altar.

Menstrual fluid was held to be dirty, awful and even dangerous for others who touched it. The taboo was strong in the Roman world and prevailed through the Middle Ages until the 20th century.

Women were stopped from entering church during their periods or from receiving holy communion. At times they received communion on a cloth spread out over their hands. They certainly were too ‘unclean’ to approach the altar!

To cap it all, women were held responsible for causing men to sin.

Eve was blamed for seducing Adam, and all women were deemed to suffer the punishment of God’s curse on Eve, namely that she would always be subject to men.

It was cultural prejudices that propped up the exclusion of women from the priestly ministry. Church authorities have simply not woken up to this fact.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

This prejudice derives from the Fathers of the Church and theologians in the Middle Ages.

They attributed procreation to the father: the whole future child is carried in the male sperm, they thought; the mother is just like soil in which the seed grows up.

Since women are thus not complete human beings, they cannot represent Christ who is perfect.

Moreover, surely when a priest acts in the person of Christ, the quality signified by him is not Christ’s maleness, but his role as mediator!

Christ can be represented by women as much as by men because women are equal in Christ.

Women too bear Christ’s image.

Moreover, women already act as ‘other Christs’ when they are ministers of baptism and marriage.

In fact, women reflect better Christ’s feminine traits

Last not least, women too can represent Christ’s love which is the essence of his priesthood!

The Church is wrong, therefore, to exclude women from the priestly ministry on the plea that they cannot represent Christ! Zina
